Studenica + Sopoćani – manastiri

4.91 (270)

About this tour

Two UNESCO-listed monasteries — the medieval heart of Serbian spirituality, in a single day.

Studenica and Sopoćani are the two most important Serbian medieval monasteries, both inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The tour takes you through the lush valleys of western Serbia to churches whose frescoes count among the finest achievements of Byzantine art.

Studenica Monastery, founded by Stefan Nemanja in the 12th century, holds untouched 13th-century frescoes and the relics of Saint Simeon. Sopoćani, the small royal monastery of King Uroš I, is considered the pinnacle of European medieval painting — its fresco of the Dormition of the Virgin has been called the most beautiful fresco in Europe.

Your guide is an art historian who, along the way, tells the story of medieval Serbia, the Nemanjić dynasty and the development of Serbian spirituality.
